    Care Instructions

When it comes to washing and caring for functional materials, it is often more challenging than the average t-shirt, but do not fear, it is not a science.  In the following we have compiled the most important information for the care of our jackets and coats and ask you to consider two basic things:

    • The rule of thumb applied to the frequency of washing - as often as necessary and as seldom as possible.  This not only protects the resources, but also the babywearing jacket, whose functionality (e.g. breathability, wind and rain proofed) can be impaired by frequent washing.  Sometimes it is enough to air the jacket (especially wool) or to treat affected areas with a damp cloth.
    • Please always pay attention to the directions on the care label (water temperature, wash cycle and drying method), because each jacket type has its own materials, which in turn have their own care requirements.

Do not underestimate the need to use the correct washing or impregnation product.  The products recommended by mamalila can be found here in our online shop.

    About washing and caring for

The Right Care for Your mamalila Babywearing Jacket

All of our babywearing jackets are simultaneously functional jackets and therefore require the correct care. Here are some tips and tricks to help you enjoy your mamalila jacket over an extended time:

    1. Gentle Pre-treatment:

For stubborn stains, first soak the jacket in clear water for a few minutes and treat the stains with a cloth, if necessary with a little detergent.

    2. Washing in the Washing Machine:

    • Close all zip and Velcro closures and turn the jacket inside out.
    • To achieve the best washing result, the washing machine should be no more than 2/3 full.
    • Wash the jacket at maximum 30°C (as indicated on the care label) on a gentle wash cycle and select “extra rinse”.
    • The less detergent residue remains in the jacket, the better. Fabrics which have a membrane are high-tech materials and as such are relatively sensitive to chemicals and wash products that remain. These can permanently block the membrane or cause it to become porous.

    The Right Detergent:

Please use a fine liquid detergent (not a wool detergent) or a detergent special for sports and outdoor wear. Why:

    • Washing powders can stick to the membrane and restrict the breathability of the babywearing jacket.
    • Wool, colour and regular detergents contain added bleach, optical brighteners and in some cases, fabric softeners. These can damage the membrane or the tape that’s used for welded seams.
    • A pure fine detergent generally does not contain any of these substances and is washed out more easily. Specially designed functional/outdoor detergents are optimally fitted to laminated fabrics (membranes) and thus, in case of doubt, the better choice (for example Nikwax TechWash®, available in our online shop or in supermarkets).

Important – never use fabric softener!

    • Just like washing powders, softeners can also damage the membrane and thus restrict the breathability of the jacket.
    • If you normally use softener, it is advisable to run the machine empty and extra clean the softener drawer before washing your babywearing/functional jacket.

    3. Drying:

Your jacket can be tumble dried (according to the care label) or air dried. Drying in the dryer is advisable for functional textiles, as the outer impregnation, which repels water, is naturally refreshed and lasts longer this way.

    4. Ironing:

If necessary, you can iron your jacket on level 1.

    • Here too the heat of the iron reactivates, just like a dryer, the impregnation.

    5. Impregnation:

After three to five washes you should re-impregnate the jacket. Please use an FC/PFC free product (e.g. Nikwax TX.direct® as a spray or washing liquid, available in the mamalila-Shop).

    • The membrane ensures that the jacket remains water proof even without impregnation. However, without impregnation the outer material would soak and feel cold and wet. Therefore, functional jackets are also impregnated on the outside and here at mamalila we use an FC-free environmentally friendly product.

The Right Care for Your mamalila Woolen Products (Hooded Coat/Babywearing Cover)

The mamalila hooded coat is made from 100% boiled wool, a material that is naturally thermoregulating, dirt and odour repellent. Your babywearing coat therefore does not need much care, and as the natural qualities of the wool are lessened with each wash, in this case (the same applies to the mamalila woollen cover) less is truly more.

Some tips for the care of your woollen products:

    1. Airing

For a fresh feeling when wearing your coat/cover it is often enough to air it.

    • Preferable in the damp night air, thus wrinkles and odours disappear and your coat is ready for use the next day
(direct sun light or rain should be avoided).

    2. Washing

    The right detergent is essential!

It is important that you only use a suitable, special wool detergent and that then only in small quantities.

    • Other detergents promote matting or pilling and may also cause the coat to lose its shape.

    Wash in the bath:

Should it be absolutely necessary to wash the coat, we recommend washing it in a bathtub with a small amount of wool detergent and plenty of water (about 30°C). The same applies for the wool cover.

    • Be sure to rinse the wool detergent well with cold, clear water so that no residue remains in the material.
    • Do not soak or rub the coat/cover in the water, this promotes pilling and matting, as well as the loss of shape.
    • Do not wring or knead.

    3. Drying:

Roll the coat into a towel and squeeze the excess water gently out.
Then lay the coat on a fresh towel to dry.

    4. Dry cleaning:

Alternatively, you can opt to have your coat dry cleaned with special cleansing agents (R113, R11, perchlorethylene and hydrocarbons).

    • Important, the cleaning symbol (with the underline) indicates that certain cleaning limitations must be observed, which are known to trained personnel.

Caring for Your mamalila Cotton Coat

The mamalila cotton coat with wind proof membrane and water repellent coating is also a functional garment and should therefore only be washed if it is really necessary.

Note: The babywearing coat from laminated organic cotton is made from very high quality materials. Due to the fineness of the fabric, heavy use can lead to colour changes on the edges and seams, frequent washing likewise.

    Additional care tips:

    1. Washing, drying, ironing

The mamalila babywearing coat from organic cotton can be washed in the washing machine.

    • Turn the coat inside out to wash and ideally wash the coat separately.
    • If available, use the hand wash cycle on your washing machine and set to “cold”, alternatively wash the coat “cold” on a gentle cycle (maximum spin speed of 600 revolutions).
    • Please use a mild detergent without optical brightener and no fabric softener.
    • Hang to dry after washing.
    • Treating the coat with heat will reactivate the water repellent function of the coat. Please iron the coat on a low level heat, taking care to avoid the buttons and zippers.

    2. Impregnation:

When the water repellency of the short coat begins to wear off, the outer coat should be re-impregnated with a cotton specific product (e.g. Cotton Proof from Nikwax) to refresh the rain protection.

    • Before impregnation, you can wash the coat with a special product for impregnating textiles (e.g. TechWash® from NikWax), thus making the subsequent impregnation hold better.
    • Tip: the impregnation with (e.g. Cotton Proof® from NikWax) also refreshes the overall appearance of the coat and is therefore absolutely recommended.

Note: The babywearing coat from lined organic cotton is made of very high quality materials. Due to the fineness of the fabric, the fabric may fade on points of stress (e.g. pockets) or if washed on a non-gentle cycle.
